Opossums (Dedelphis virginiana)
The opossum is likely one of the least liked nuisance wildlife animals, yet they have a very undeserved reputation. While they are not necessarily the most visually appealing species, they are quite beneficial to our natural environment. A naturally low body temperature which is often unsuitable to carry the rabies virus (and other potential viruses) and a desire to eat ticks which carry a plethora of harmful viruses and diseases, makes this little creature a highly beneficial animal to our natural environment.
Unfortunately, its benefits to the environment do not necessarily excuse it from the damage that it can do to the attic and crawl space of a home. Damage to insulation, vapor barriers, and duct work usually results in the dismissal of its natural benefits to the average homeowner.
