Signs You’re Dealing with an Armadillo
✅ Cone-Shaped HolesArmadillos dig small, cone-shaped holes about 1–3 inches wide and 3–5 inches deep. These are from rooting around for grubs and insects just below the surface.
✅ Burrows Near StructuresThey love to dig large burrows under porches, AC pads, decks, or even near foundations. These can be 7–10 inches wide and several feet deep.
✅ Nighttime ActivityArmadillos are nocturnal. If you’re seeing fresh holes each morning but never spot the culprit during the day — you might have a stealthy nighttime digger.
✅ No Trash DisturbanceIf your yard’s a mess but your trash cans are untouched, it's likely not raccoons. Armadillos are focused on bugs, not your leftovers.
❌ When It’s Not an Armadillo
Scattered trash, tipped cans, or roof noise? That’s more likely a raccoon or opossum.
Tunnels and soft mounds, no cone-shaped holes?Probably a mole or vole, which tunnel just beneath the surface.
Paw prints and wide, messy digging?Could be feral cats, dogs, or other wildlife like skunks or even foxes.
🧱 Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Armadillo Activity
Aside from cosmetic yard damage, armadillos can:
Compromise foundations and cause structural issues
Destroy landscaping and irrigation
Create trip hazards with hidden burrows
Carry leprosy bacteria (rare, but it’s a real thing)
So while they’re not aggressive animals, they can do a surprising amount of damage over time.
